Author Order and Authorship Criteria (ICMJE)

Reading time: about 7 minutesUpdated: 2026-09-13
Authorship is credit and accountability. The reference most reputable journals point to is the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which sets four criteria that must all be met together.

The four ICMJE criteria

Someone who only provided funding, only supplied data, or merely headed the department is not an author under this rule — but should be named in the Acknowledgements.

What the order of names signals

There is no single global rule and conventions differ by field, but in most experimental disciplines the order is read like this:

PositionCommon meaning
First authorDid most of the hands-on and writing work; usually the person who drove the study.
Middle authorsSpecific contributions: statistics, lab work, data collection.
Last authorIn many fields, the senior supervisor or lab head.
Corresponding authorThe journal’s point of contact; answers for peer review and after publication. Can be any of the above.
Agree the order before writing begins and put it in writing. Most authorship disputes start where that conversation was postponed to the end.

Honorary and ghost authorship

“Honorary authorship” means adding a name that did no work; “ghost authorship” means omitting someone who actually wrote the paper. COPE treats both as research misconduct, and the outcome can be a retraction — which stays on the record permanently.

So how is research collaboration done properly?

Through a real, documented contribution. If someone is to join a study, they need a defined role — data analysis, literature review, lab work, scientific writing — and that role must be recorded. That is the rule at ApplyDesk too: every authorship position carries a recorded role and scope of work and passes human review before publication. A position is never assigned without a real contribution.

FAQ

Must my supervisor be an author on my paper?
Only if they meet all four ICMJE criteria. Supervision alone, or providing funding, does not confer authorship — the Acknowledgements section is the right place for that. In practice supervisors usually do contribute to design and critical review, and so qualify.
Can authors be added or removed after submission?
It is difficult and never frictionless. Journals normally require a formal letter signed by every author explaining the reason, and some do not permit changes at all after acceptance.
